A Message from Charles Harkness, DO, Chief Medical Officer

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Southeast Alabama Medical Center’s (SAMC) medical staff page. SAMC’s medical staff is a self-governing organization of physicians who provide outstanding care for our patients and who are committed to each other, SAMC and our community.

During the past nine years, SAMC has grown from a community hospital to a teaching hospital. By mentoring and teaching medical students, our medical staff has been instrumental in making this growth possible. As a result of this effort, SAMC’s Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine now prepares 160 medical students each year for careers that may include practicing in the Wiregrass.

The medical staff includes more than 350 Board-certified or Board-prepared physicians representing virtually every medical specialty. Physicians are actively involved in Medical Center decisions and processes, especially in the areas of patient safety and quality improvement. One recent example is Care Coordination Huddles on every floor, a team review of patients on a daily basis to ensure care is being delivered in an efficient and effective manner.

Physician participation in the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Peer Review Committee, Credentials Committee, and many others, ensures that SAMC works continuously to improve patient care and safety. I believe that this level of physician involvement results in higher physician satisfaction and drives improvements in patient care, patient experience and patient satisfaction.
