Physical Therapy
The Physical Therapy Department focuses on returning people to their daily work and leisure activities after an injury or surgery. Therapists are committed to doing a thorough evaluation on each person and treating the individual rather than the condition. A physical therapist will assess ROM, strength, muscle imbalance, and joint restriction to help determine present levels or deficits. The evaluation will help the therapist determine the best treatment plan for the patient. In addition, patients receive instruction for home exercise programs individually designed to help further their recovery and continue long term management.

As a continued commitment to our patients, we offer several new therapies – Anodyne Therapy and Balance Therapy.

Balance Therapy utilizes state-of-the-art equipment including a Biodex Isokinetic dynamometer, a Biodex Gait Trainer treadmill, and the Biodex Balance System. This equipment objectively assesses and trains both gait and balance. They are great tools for our therapists to provide our patients the best care possible.

Low Vision
Low vision is the 3rd leading cause of disability in the elderly. It is a condition that primarily affects older adults. Low vision is caused by macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. There is no cure and in most cases vision loss is permanent. Low vision is a visual impairment severe enough to limit ability to complete daily living activities. Occupational therapy focuses on enabling a person to safely and independently complete daily tasks that are compromised by vision loss.

This is accomplished by teaching a person to use remaining vision as efficiently as possible to complete activities, modifying activities so they can be completed with less vision and training in the use of adaptive equipment to compensate for vision loss.

For more information regarding Low Vision contact the Occupational Therapy Department at SAMC 334-793-8161.

Post Mastectomy and Lymphedema
Post-mastectomy lymphedema can occur in the arms and legs. It is a fluid produced by your body's lymphatic system to fight infection. If the lymph vessels that carry the fluid are missing, impaired, damaged or removed, an abnormal amount of fluid can collect in the tissues of the affected area causing the tissue to swell and become abnormally large. It interferes with wound healing and provides and environment for bacteria to grow which can result in an infection if left untreated. The most effective treatment for lymphedema, which can be done through Occupational Therapy, is complete decongestive physiotherapy. This is a non-invasive, painless technique consisting of manual lymph drainage, exercise, compressive therapy and skin care.
