What is a Volunteer?
A volunteer is someone who gives the most precious gifts of all - their time, their talents and most of all themselves. When YOU volunteer, you become an integral part of a hospital that is committed to delivering the highest quality health care.

What is a Southeast Alabama Medical Center volunteer?
Our volunteers are true stars - exceptional individuals who take the extra steps that make a difference in another person's life. They help in countless ways by making a child laugh or an older person smile. Our volunteers are caring, dedicated and committed. Through their many meaningful activities, our volunteers help further the objectives of SAMC and provide the best possible support and comfort for our patients, their families and visitors.

What type of person is a hospital volunteer?
The truth is that there is no one type. It takes special people like you to give freely of their valuable time and talents to help others. Here at SAMC, we offer two separate programs, Adult and TeenAge Volunteers (TAVs).

Adult Volunteers -

At SAMC, you'll find volunteers from all walks of life from retirees to homemakers to new-comers into the community. Schedules are set to meet your individual needs and the needs of the department which you are serving. Preferred times are noted on the application. Assignments are made as often as possible, to meet individual requests. A minimum of four hours of service per week is requested, however, more time may be volunteered.

How are volunteers prepared for service?
Volunteers are interviewed and carefully placed in a service where their interests, talents and schedules complement SAMC's needs. We provide an orientation and training program.

Orientation helps a volunteer to:
•    Learn about the goals and visions of SAMC
•    Become familiar with the hospital and various departments
•    Meet other volunteers
•    Receive special safety instructions

Training: Each volunteer begins with a temporary assignment and new volunteers are paired with experienced workers until they feel comfortable working alone.

Is there a dress code?
•    Adult Volunteers wear a casual red coat (provided by SAMC) along with blue/black pants and a white shirt.
•    TAVs are required to wear a uniform of navy blue pants and a green polo (provided by SAMC).
•    All volunteers are required to wear the uniform and an identifying name badge while on duty. Above all, each volunteer wears a big smile.
