On December 13 the Houston County Health Care Authority received official recognition from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the status of Pre-accreditation for the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM). The official recognition was tied to a simultaneous award of licensure from the Alabama Post-Secondary Department of Education.

This action now allows ACOM to move forward with the continuation of the hiring plan for faculty and staff. Secondly, groundbreaking will commence in January 2012 for the construction of the $40 million college with an anticipated completion in May 2013.

The next step in the medical college journey is a request from ACOM for Provisional Accreditation which leads to accepting students for admission to the new Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in the fall of 2013.
