SAMC hosts heart health event for area women

The mouth watering aroma of heart healthy cooking recently filled the Dothan Civic Center as Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) sponsored its annual heart awareness event.

Approximately 300 women, children and men attended Hearts N Motion to celebrate National Heart Awareness Month. The event, which invites women to step to a healthy heart beat, is an interactive day of fun that includes exercise, dance and healthy cooking demonstrations, free health screenings and educational activities.

“Each year the event gets bigger and more exciting,” said Gloria Biddings, heal th education coordinator at SAMC. “Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and hopefully we educated them on how to be more heart healthy.”

The exercise and dancing demonstrations were coordinated by Ron Devane, owner of the Dothan Dance Club. Dancing demonstrations included the Do-Sa-Dos Square Dancers of Dothan and ballroom steps from the Dothan Dance Club. When it came time to pick up the pace, Impact Fitness, Paradise Fitness and Candace Jackson raised everyone’s heart beat with Zumba demonstrations.

As everyone worked up an appetite, culinary students from the Dothan Technology Center were on hand preparing easy salmon cakes, no bake cookies, wake up smoothies and other heart healthy dishes to sample.

Of course the day wouldn’t be complete without the free health screenings. More than 100 women took advantage of the cholesterol, glucose and thyroid screenings. More than 20 booths were set up offering everything from blood pressure checks to height, weight and body fat analysis.

“The screenings are always a big hit and Hearts N Motion allows us to promote wellness to those we serve and partner with our community to make a difference in their health. Making a difference is what it’s all about,” said Biddings.

Biddings said the success of the event can be attributed to the people who volunteer their time. “We couldn’t provide this to the community without volunteers from the hospital and the community.”
