This program is targeted to those in an acute crisis who need immediate medical care.Services Severe depression or anxiety, psychotic symptoms and the need for medication stabilization are examples of such crises. Our clinical approach is to quickly intervene through medical management, establishment of support systems and solution-focused therapy.

Behavioral Medicine Unit

SAMC's Behavioral Health Unit is a medically supervised and licensed facility offering individual program plans for adults 19 years and older. The mission of the Behavioral Health team is to provide adult crisis intervention, stabilization and treatment. The team consists of board-certified psychiatrists, certified psychiatric nurses, a mental health clinical specialist, licensed professional counselors, occupational therapists and mental health associates who implement treatment plans and monitor patient progress toward individual treatment goals.

Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit

The Geriatric Program is designed for adults 65 years of age or older. It offers individualized treatment that is specific and sensitive to development or situational crises of older adults. Through a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment process, this program helps the patient and family reach the highest possible level of productivity and mental health.

Outpatient Psychiatric Services


AltaCare provides psychiatric programs for adults, adolescents and children. Our caring staff provides effective mental health treatment for depression, acute stress and anxiety, loss or grief issues, and other psychiatric or behavioral problems. We also provide chemical dependency services to treat substance abusse issues based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Our Compassion and Respect for Every Senior (CARES) program at Southeast Alabama Medical CenterCARESProgram is a high-quality inpatient psychiatric program for adults ages 65 and older who are faced with an emotional or behavioral problem, distress or anxiety.

CARES provides professional help to older adults dealing with life-changing events such as the loss of a spouse, physical limitations and changes in mental status who may be experiencing emotional, cognitive or behavioral symptoms which have disrupted everyday life. Our multi-disciplined approach includes assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

We treat those who:

  • Have impaired thinking
  • Have severe anxiety, agitation or obsessions
  • Have depression
  • Have severely impaired social functioning
  • Have legal or family dysfunction
  • Are suicidal or may be potentially dangerous to others

Our Mood and Anxiety Disorders (MAP) program at Southeast Alabama Medical Center is a short-termMoodAnxietyDisorders inpatient treatment program for individuals ages 19 and over who are suffering from a variety of disorders including:

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Anxiety/Panic Disorder
  • Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder
  • Severe Depression
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Our innovative program offers a wide range of treatment options based on an in-depth evaluation and a review of the case history of each patient. Our evidence-based care follows a multi-disciplinary approach and is individualized – designed to meet specific patient needs in a compassionate and respectful environment.

MAP also serves as a referral center for medical and surgical patients within the Medical Center who may need evaluation and treatment for psychiatric disorders occurring in conjunction with general medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain or cancer.
