Thank you for your interest in the proposed Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) in Dothan, Alabama.
ACOM is the first osteopathic medical college that will operate as an academic division of a regional medical center. The Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) is a 420-bed, tertiary hospital with 2,500 dedicated employees and 300 active medical staff. SAMC is committed to medical education and plans to develop a number of residency programs targeted to begin in 2013.
ACOM is in the initial accreditation stages (see disclaimer below). Once the College receives provisional accreditation status (projected, summer 2012), we will be listed on the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS) website, www.aacom.org.
In the meantime, we encourage you to visit the website of the Alabama Medical Education Consortium (AMEC) at http://www.amecdo.com for information on medical school opportunities with partnering colleges of osteopathic medicine outside the state of Alabama. Students enrolled in the AMEC pipeline complete the first two years of didactic study on the campus of the partnering college of osteopathic medicine. Completion of their medical degree comes by fulfilling 3rd and 4th year clinical clerkships in the state of Alabama. AMEC schedules and coordinates clerkship rotations and testing requirements for these students through its educational network.
