The Intensive Treatment Program (ITP) is a mental health inpatient program for adults ages 19 and over and provides help for those who need immediate psychiatric care in a safe and secure environment.  This licensed unit provides the care and support needed to allow patients to re-enter their lives with fresh perspectives and renewed spirits.

Our team of psychiatrists, medical doctors, licensed counselors and social workers, psychiatric nurses and specially trained staff provide care with dignity and compassion.  Our multi-discipline approach allows for quick intervention in crisis situations.  We help patients to:

  • Resolve immediate conflicts
  • Develop trust
  • Enhance self-confidence
  • Learn problem-solving skills

Our Intensive Treatment Program professionals specialize in creating a treatment plan – with input from the patient and family members – and treating individuals who have severe and/or enduring mental health problems. Treatment plans may include:

  • Crisis stabilization with medication management
  • Medical evaluation
  • Treatment planning
  • Individual therapy
  • Insight-oriented group therapy
  • Family therapy
  • A 24-hour staff presence
  • Discharge planning and aftercare

The ITP is a specialized area of the Medical Center which allows for closer observation and is the region’s largest hospital-based inpatient program.

A message for referring physicians:
SAMC’s ITP and Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program physicians and staff understand the importance of continuity of care. A schedule is established at the time of admission to update referring physicians with patient progress reports. As the patient improves, the referring professional is encouraged to participate in the discharge planning process. This team approach ensures the patient a smooth transition from hospital to home and back into everyday life.

The Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program (MAP) for adults 19 and over is specially designed for adults with depression, bipolar disorder or extreme anxiety disorders. Many of these patients have a dual diagnosis with substance abuse and a dual recovery program is offered.

Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we recognize that mood and anxiety disorders can affect anyone at any time and might be rooted in a combination of genetics, environment and specific circumstances. The MAP can help patients successfully improve quality of life. We treat:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder

AltaCare’s outpatient psychiatry and licensed professional counseling services focus on comprehensive mental assessments, diagnosis and treatment of conditions. Our services are available to adults and adolescents age 13 and older. Services include psychiatric evaluation and medication monitoring. Conditions treated include:

  • Depression
  • Acute stress
  • Anxiety
  • Grief or loss
  • ADHD
  • PTSD
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Personality disorder
  • Behavioral health conditions.

Mental health is vitally important to quality of life. We understand that for many people, it can be difficult to acknowledge a need for help. There can be a tendency to think that these conditions indicate personal failure or weakness. Unlike physical conditions, many people find it more difficult to reach out for help with emotional difficulties. Research indicates that an estimated 26 percent of Americans – including one in four adults – suffer from a mental disorder during any given year. Most people with mental disorders continue to function normally in their daily lives.

However, these disorders are the leading cause of disability in the United States for individuals age 15-44. AltaCare-trained professionals provide an evaluation, and design a treatment plan, to meet individual needs, such as reducing stress, enhancing relationships and improving overall quality of life.

AltaCare is a service for individuals facing an acute crisis and who need immediate care, but do not require inpatient treatment. Severe depression or anxiety, psychotic symptoms and the need for medication stabilization are examples of such crises. Our clinical approach is to quickly intervene through medical management, establishment of support systems and solution-focused therapy.

Referrals to AltaCare are accepted from professionals and family members. Our services are covered by most major health insurance plans. Pre-admission verification and rates are available upon request.

Private pay arrangements are also available. For further information or to schedule an assessment, call us at 334-794-4582 or 1-800-248-2773.

AltaCare provides a psychiatric partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults age 19 and older. Patients receive intensive daily treatment Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with one hour for lunch. They return to the comforts of home and family in the evenings. Partial hospitalization is often an efficient and cost effective level of care because it serves a variety of purposes. AltaCare’s multi-disciplinary team of professionals treats a full range of emotional problems. The treatment team may include:

  • Psychiatrist
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Registered Nurse

Partial hospitalization can include:

  • An intermediate level of care for patients who need more structure than traditional outpatient therapy can provide.
  • A step-up from traditional outpatient care for patients who do not improve or whose condition worsens.
  • A less costly alternative to inpatient care.
  • A step-down from inpatient care that allows patients to gradually resume their roles in day-to-day living.
